The full form of TLC is Total Leukocyte Count. TLC or WBC count is a blood test that evaluates the number of WBC (white blood cells), also known as leukocytes. The leukocytes are the essential parts of our defense mechanism as they fight with infections. It is one of the tests among complete blood count (CBC), which is often used in the general evaluation of your overall health. Blood is a fluid connective tissue made up of three types of cells suspended in a fluid known as plasma. WBC, RBC, and platelets are the types of cells that originate from bone marrow and circulates in the bloodstream.
There are five types of WBCs, each having different functions. They are neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes. Whenever any infection occurs in the body, bone marrow realizes more WBCs through a complex process. They move at the infection site and help to fight against infections. As the condition resolves, the production of WBCs from the bone marrow drops to normal range. In addition to infections and inflammation, few conditions can affect the production of WBCs by the bone marrow or the existence of WBCs in the bloodstream, such conditions include immune disorder or cancer, resulting in either increased or decreased numbers of WBCs in the blood. The WBC count, along with the other components of the CBC, alerts doctors about health issues.
A TLC test is typically recommended as part of the complete blood count (CBC), which may be performed as a routine health examination. The test may be done when a person is having general signs and symptoms of an infection or inflammation, such as:
TLC Testing may also be performed when there are signs and symptoms that a healthcare provider thinks may be related to a blood disorder, autoimmune disorder or an immune deficiency.
A blood sample is usually withdrawn from veins, and the blood sample is collected in a vial tube. The sample is analyzed in the laboratory, and the result is interpreted as a report.
The Normal Result – The normal WBCs in the blood are 4,500 to 11,000 WBCs per microliter. The standard range may vary slightly depending on various factors such as age, gender.
The Abnormal Result – Low WBCs count known as leukemia, can result from conditions like:
High WBC count is known as leukocytosis, can results from conditions such as:
